Who are you hiring?

I have an unorthodox birth into the construction world.  I went to college for Wildlife Biology and Journalism.  After acquiring my bachelors I started running children's climbing programs at The Front Climbing Club (circa 2012) here in Salt Lake City.  I acquired a second job as a gearhead for Backcountry.com and worked nonstop.  I had a cubicle, I punched my clock, and my time for climbing dwindled to nearly nonexistent.  After 9 months, I had enough.  I decided I wanted to facilitate a life where my passions and my career could go hand in hand.  I sold everything I owned, and moved into the bed of a Ford F-150 with my then four month old German Shorthair puppy, Sadey.  I lived on the road full time for the following six years.

I climbed in 28 states, traveled in 42, climbed/biked/trail ran in 11 countries and finally looped back around to settle back down in Salt Lake City. During those 6 years I worked odd jobs to keep my dreams alive, and to put miles behind my truck or van. I was self supported throughout my time on the road.  I found that I was good at home remodeling and started working for custom home builders and contractors all over SD and CO. After a few years I decided it was something I could branch off and do on my own.

I originally incorporated “Nomad Construction” as an LLC while parked at a rest area in Fort Collins. By then, Sadey and I had been living together on the road for 3.5 years and I felt I had finally found the medium that worked best for me to continue fueling that lifestyle. I had been in Fort Collins, CO for a few months working for a contractor who I felt did poor work, and I realized that I could be doing the same projects as him with better quality work and customer service. My first job as Nomad Construction was to install some Exit signs and patch a puppy shaped hole in some drywall at a doggy daycare. From there it grew to doing a few backsplashes, some cabinet painting, small built-in shelving and before long I was doing full bathrooms and larger projects all over the front range of the Rocky Mountains, from Fort Collins to Denver. Over the subsequent three years I worked in Alabama, South Dakota, Washington, Utah and regularly all over Colorado. My tool collection grew to where I acquired a used 5x8 trailer that I also towed behind the van. I continued to plan large international climbing and travel trips in between projects.

Wary to leave my life on the road, demand for my work began to grow beyond what was feasible from a 76 square foot Sprinter Van and ultimately I decided to move back to the greatest mountain city in the US (ahem, move to Denver, not Salt Lake). Once in Salt Lake, Nomad Construction wasn’t an available business name in the state, so Nomad Builders was born. I love Salt Lake City, and it’s an incredible base for all the activities that drive me. I love working with all the people of this community and love the city and all its people more every day. I also haven’t completely left my roots behind.

Since living and working solely based in Salt Lake, I’ve managed to find time for a month long ski trip through British Columbia, 10 days of sport climbing in Cuba, 6 weeks of climbing and biking all over Mexico, 6 weeks of climbing in the southeast US, and countless trips to the desert, Ouray, Idaho, California, and of course my regular presence in our beloved Wasatch. Don’t be surprised if you run into me out on the skinner, roping up at the bottom of an LCC classic, taking whippers in American Fork, bombing down Bobsled, trail running Black Mountain, or scrambling somewhere along the Alpine or Cottonwood ridges. Look close, you may even see Sadey tagging along behind (depending on our watershed presence of course!).

Please check out the galleries below, the first one is a few select photos from a few select trips that construction has facilitated for me. Which include: solo hitchhiking through Patagonia climbing for three months, 6 weeks in Nepal trekking and climbing, 6 weeks climbing in Thailand, 2 weeks trail running, hitching, and exploring the jungles and volcanoes of Guatemala, 6 weeks climbing and biking in Mexico, 10 days climbing in Cuba, 2 months of high elevation alpinism in Peru, one month of skiing through British Columbia, many summits of Rainier, 4 weeks kayaking, backpacking and rafting in Norway, and of course some shots from our beloved state of Utah.

The second gallery is a brag gallery of how great Sadey is, there’s a reason she will always be my logo. She has been by my side for 8 years of this writing and she is the greatest companion I could ever ask for.
